The Nielsen National Consumer Panel home scan is now accepting applicants for certain markets. (It is totally free to submit an application) If you are accepted, you will receive a scanner which you will use to track the different items you purchase. Then, once a week you will submit your shopping scans from the week.
In return for this, you can earn some great prizes such as electronics, toys and gift cards. If you are selected as a panel member, you will be entered to win one of 25 FREE $500 American Express Gift Cards and 40 FREE $500 American Express Gift Cards given away to members every quarter! Not everyone gets accepted, but I definitely think it is worth trying for. You can return the scanner whenever you choose you no longer wish to participate.
